Cleaning up oil spills with peat
BECAUSE OF IT'S ABSORBENCY, peat moss has been used in oil spill clean-ups. Science Daily reported that in 2009, an oil spill of the coast of Norway was partly cleaned up by mixing gravel and stones from the beach with peat moss and then placing them back on the beach. The moss trapped oil, which washed ashore. Some companies keep buckets of peat moss near machinery to use in case of oil or other liquid spills, and homeowners can also place peat moss on top of driveway oil spills to absorb the oil. The moss can then be swept up.
