Irish Peat Safety Tips

Since Irish peat must be burned to be experienced, you should always be safety conscious. All burning devices, BBQs, smokers, incense burners, fireplaces and stoves, come with manufacturer’s safety directions, please read them and follow them carefully.

1Never leave any fire unattended.

2In an emergency and to douse the fire, carefully douse fire with water or sand or use a dry chemical fire extinguisher.

3Watch burning peat and make certain the ash is dropping where it should. If the ash is falling outside its container you might need to reposition it or use a different burner. It’s a very good idea to contain the ash. It can discolor furniture and might even be hot enough to be a fire hazard itself.

4A little peat goes a long way. Most homes and apartments are adequately ventilated to burn a small piece of peat, however, it is not recommended to burn peat in small enclosed environments, as that may cause dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to collect.

5Have your chimney or wood stove inspected and cleaned annually by a certified chimney specialist. Clear the area around the hearth of debris, decorations and flammable materials.

6Never burn cardboard boxes, trash or debris in your fireplace or wood stove. When building a fire, place peat logs at the rear of the fireplace on an adequate supporting grate.
